Living for theater

It’s been a busy month for Kabrina Lee Feickart, the female lead of Pierce College’s rendition of Arthur Miller’s 1947 play, “All My Sons,” premiering April 4.

“This spring I’m setting up the Easter Bunny set for my first time, in the Burbank Town Center,” she said. “I also worked with Santa in winter. We’re on a first name basis. I have his number on my cell phone.”

Feickart grew up tiny town from up north, San Geronimo, in Marin County. It’s just above San Francisco.

“When I was a little kid, I wished upon a star and thought I outsmarted the cosmos. I wished to be happy and content,” she said. “Since then I’ve always had a positive outlook, kind of like a ‘Pollyanna’ point of view. But to be summed up, I’m more of a realistic-optimist.”

She was always performing on a stage. The small-town girl was into ballet when she was a child, even auditioning for the San Francisco Ballet Company in the second grade. When she suffered a growth injury in her knee, she started doing plays in her elementary school.

“When I was (6 years old), I wrote and produced a play about a girl’s bunnies being stolen by Martians. I charged my family 10 cents,” recalled Feickart. At age 16, Feickart taught herself how to sew and do costuming.

She started out with Victorian outfits.

“I didn’t know that it was the hardest type of costumes to make,” she said. “I just did it and got the hang of it quickly.”

Feickart has done costumes for Six Flags Mexico City and refurbished costumes for Universal Studios.

“It’s my bread and butter,” she explained. “I do it between doing acting jobs.”

Since she graduated from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, Calif., Feickart has made large steps into her ultimate goal “to lead a full life.” She’s been in various plays and has been in four independent films.

“The last film I was in was ‘Rolling,’ and last I heard it has been going around the festival circuit, heading from London to New York,” she said. “There was even talk about it heading to Sundance.”

In 2006, she took her full stage theatrical at Pierce instead of doing smaller things such as improv groups and acting work.

Her first stage performance at Pierce was “The Elephant Man” in 2006. Since then, she was also in “The Matchmaker” and now in “All My Sons.”

“The lead role of Ann Deever has the closest character to ‘me.’ She’s the only role I’ve played my age since I’ve been here,” Feickart said.

“It’s hard for me to pick my favorite character to act as, but each has their own charm. It’s been easy to relate to the Ann, though. I feel the emotional ties. I was unsure about doing a play this season until I read the script and heard what RoZsa (Horvath) had to say about it. My family is coming down from Marin to watch me for the first time (at Pierce).”

“One day, I’d love to live in a theater town and work in costume design. The Bay Area, Portland, Chicago, even Texas have great career opportunities,” said Feickart. “If I’m not working (in a play), I’m auditioning.

Even it’s in a children’s theater, I’d be happy. If I’m not in a production, I get really bored. Anything in theater would be my great.”

From her small-production beginnings in her living room to large stage performances at Pierce, Kabrina Lee Feickart will always find a way to entertain fans of theater, even if it’s for small children seeing the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.
