When ‘No!’ isn’t enough

Being entirely sick is the only option Afghan women have from having sex with their husbands.

Last month, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai signed the Shia Family Law, implementing a husband’s right to have sex with his wife without her consent.

In other words, an act that is entirely beastly has become humane in Afghanistan.

However, today is Denim Day.

It is the day where wearing denim jeans raises awareness about sexual violence and prevention.
Denim Day was established in 1998 as a way of protesting a 1997 Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn the conviction of a man who raped a 17-year-old girl.

The court ruled on the appeal because she was wearing tight jeans (making it difficult for the rapist to take them off without her help) therefore indicating the act was under her consent.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there were 786 reported rape crimes in Los Angeles last year. Even though it went down a petty 15 percent in comparison to 2007, the rate is still alarming.

Rape is an intolerable act that leaves victims with serious physical, psychological, social and health behaviors, according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.

Today is the perfect time to wear those denim jeans to protest the Afghan law and to support victims of rape and sexual assault in every part of the world.
