If you like a good mystery, “Whiteout” might be the movie for you.
Based on the Greg Rucka/Steve Lieber novel of the same name, “Whiteout” begins in 1957 with a Russian cargo plane flying over Antarctica. The plane crashes, setting the table for the movie.
Jumping ahead five decades later, we find U.S. Marshall Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) who has held a position at the U.S. North Pole research station for two years.
As the only law enforcement, Stetko is sent to investigate Antarctica’s first homicide.
Still haunted by past demons, which are revealed in flashbacks thought the movie, Stetko was getting ready to leave Antarctica and turn in her badge. Her plans are put on hold upon recent discoveries, and Stetko now races to find the killer before the deadly Antarctic whiteout sets in.
Alongside friends and allies Robert Pryce (Gabriel Macht), Dr. John Fury (Tom Skerritt), and Delfry (Columbus Short) Stetko tries to piece together what happened. Not to mention how a fallen Russian cargo plan fits into it all.
With unexpected discoveries, the plot plunges our leading lady into a bizarre mystery and a series of revelations.
Beckinsale turns out to be a great choice for the part of Stetko. She leaves the sexy, mysterious persona she acquired in the film “Underworld”, and shows audiences she can play a tough and down to business woman.
The climax of the movie is no bore either.
Taking place in below zero degree weather, with hurricane like winds and snow swirling, we find a three-way chase between our heroes and the killer. The action does not end there either, with a twist in the last act that is sure to leave murder mystery lovers everywhere thunderstruck.
Claiming to be an action, adventure, suspense, thriller, and drama, “Whiteout” delivers on all accounts.
