Striving for educational equality

Dr. Kalynda Webber is the new acting associate dean for the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services program at Pierce College.

“EOP&S provides service above and beyond those services available to the general student population,” Webber said. “EOP&S was developed to ensure that students who have been deemed educationally…or economically disadvantaged are provided with additional services to ensure thier academic and personal success.

“The students that are eligible for EOP&S are accepted to the program and then provided with additional services to help them meet their academic objective,” she continued

Prior to coming to Pierce, Webber worked at Los Angeles City College since 2002 and also worked at a number of community colleges in the San Diego area, where she worked in the career and transfer centers. She also did some general counseling and has taught personal growth.

Even though Webber has only been working at Pierce College since Nov. 2, one of the things she has noticed in her short time here is the focus that is put on transferring.

“Pierce College has a very specific transfer focus for the students that are here, which is a little bit different than many of the other community colleges,” Webber said.

Webber said she has always been interested in helping students.

“One of my career aspirations is to always work towards educational equity and access to students,” she said.

When she is not working, Webber enjoys spending time with her family and learning.

“I have a desire to be a life-long learner,” she said. “I really love education, I love being in an academic atmosphere.”

Students interested in applying for EOP&S can inquire in the EOPS office, which is located on the second floor of the new Student Services Building, located near Parking Lot 1.
