School spirit gets to wave its flag

Pierce College is marking its territory with an new, up-and-coming school flag that will symbolize the unification of the school community.

This idea of putting up this flag came from former Pierce President Robert Garber. He suggested adding a flag to the mall renovation project when there was going to be an empty pole standing alone, according to Doreen Clay, Pierce public relations specialist.

“We are getting our own flag, which is pretty cool. We put in three flagpoles so that we could accommodate our own flag,” said interim President Joy McCaslin in an email.

Berliner Architect, the company in charge of the mall renovation project, created three poles by Brahma Drive. The school knew that one pole would have the American Flag and the second would have the California Flag, but the third pole had thus far been left empty.

“Let’s run a Pierce flag” Clay quoted Garber as stating.

The school’s new flag was designed by Ikkanda Designs. The flag will feature a white background with the college’s Brahma logo in black and the name of the school at the bottom in the red.

“I feel by having this new flag it will bring more school spirit into this student community,” said Anna Rodas a political science student. “I cannot wait to see it up and waiving,”

The flagpole will be the first thing students will see when they enter the campus from Brahma Drive. This will hopefully provide school spirit and motivation to keep being part of Pierce College.

“We only had like a week to get it done…for free,” said Clay.

The reason it was free was due to the extra money Pierce received to renovate the school mall. Pierce put the cost of the flag under the bond building program, funded by money resulting in passage of Proposition A in 2001 and Proposition AA in 2003.

There are no plans at this moment to have a ceremony, but the school is more than likely going to have an event as soon as it is done.
