Blackout party gets Blackout treatment

The Associated Students Organization (ASO) Blackout party on Nov.6 was blacked out by students.

The Blackout party held by the ASO in the Great Hall was a complete disaster. Event planner and ASO senator Kevin Sparks plan just never materialized.

Was it the lack of advertisement or just the timing of the event? A Friday night from 8p.m. until 11p.m. seriously. Were the planners aware that this is Los Angeles and that there are literally a thousand places you go for the same thrills that you don’t go to school at.

Even the initial planning should be called into question. According to Sparks, he payed out of pocket for the event he planned.  Sparks also said that ASO will refund his money.

The decorations left over from a 1970s themed party included a Richard Nixon name sign crossed out, Make Love Not War and the all important On the Road to San Francisco. The other fault of the party is the lack of a definite decorative theme. The lights being shut off puts it close but the lighting from the DJ adds it back up. Then you look at the walls and see a sign with Nixon crossed out and you’re left to wonder if what the theme truly is.

Even the events at the Blackout party were poorly done. The planned raffle turned into a self promotion of ASO president Shani Simms.  After that they decide a failed dance contest. The lack luster crowd of about 20 at that time never answered the pleads for applause that Simms was wanting.

The prizes for the contest that were donated to the party from the Bookstore included Key chains and one small Pierce shirt and one large Pierce shirt.

However for all the faults the Blackout party had, Sparks should be commended for his effort to bring in a little extra to the Pierce students life. His plan of putting community in community college though was not achieved was at least attempted.

Sparks also alluded to a second event that is possible for the spring. Hopefully this time around the event will be advertised to the magnitude that ASO was hoping for the event to be.
