Universities visit campus to inform students on transferring

Recruiters from three different universities came to the Pierce College Student Services building on Wednesday and Thursday to talk to students about transferring.

The University of Phoenix and Arizona State University met with students on Feb. 17 and California State University Los Angeles met with students on Feb. 18.

Each university was given three to four hours to speak to students in the Student Services building.

Each student had roughly 20 minutes each to speak to the recruitment specialist from the university.

“The turnout was very good,” said Nadia Mendoza, the recruitment specialist from CSULA. “I had nine appointments and eight walk-ins so far.”

Mendoza said the purpose of these meetings was to inform students of the transfer process.

Mariela Rubio, a third semester nursing major, had an appointment with Mendoza and spoke to her for a good 20 minutes.

Rubio found information on the transfer meeting on Pierce’s Web site.

“It was really helpful,” said Rubio.

Although CSULA was just an option, Rubio said the meeting “was more informative than persuasive.”

“Which was good because it wasn’t like they were pushing you saying ‘oh come here’,” said Rubio.

Richard Salazar, a business major, learned about the transfer meetings from his counselors at Pierce.

Salazar was disappointed to learn that CSULA was only accepting applications for Fall 2011, but it is still his school of choice.

“It is the only local school that has a criminal justice system,” said Salazar. “I’ll still apply and probably take classes here between now and then.”

In the three hours CSULA had with students, students seemed to show up more at the last minute.

Within the last 45 minutes the amount of students waiting to see Mendoza doubled.

Mendoza said that she had another eight colleges to visit and four high schools.

Representatives from Westwood College will be on campus Feb. 24, UCLA and Academy of Art will be on campus Feb. 25 and ASU will return on March 11. For exact times, check the Pierce monthly calendar at http://www.piercecollege.edu/webapps/calendar.
