President addresses major issues

President Kathleen Burke-Kelly sent out in an e-mail to faculty Tuesday in which she addressed many topics.

One of the main topics the e-mail discussed was the state’s budget situation.

“Thus far, the State has missed three payments to community colleges statewide totaling $840 million in funding,” she said in the e-mail. “This translates to 15 percent of the total CCC annual budget. Colleges throughout the state are beginning to run low on cash.”

In order for colleges to continue to make payroll they will need to issue Tax Revenue Anticipation Notes (TRANs), which would allow government agencies to engage in short-term borrowing according to Burke-Kelly.

“There is still some hope that the State budget will be approved after the mid-term elections in November,” she went on to say. “However, some Sacramento watchers report that the delay to enact a budget could drag on until after a new governor takes office in January.”

Another key topic discussed in the e-mail was the process for hiring a replacement for Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh’s.

Abu-Ghazaleh is currently serving his last week as Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“We will be filling the position on an interim basis for the remainder of this year,” she said. “The plan is for interviews to take place in October and to have an interim vice president in place from Nov. 1, 2010 through Jun. 30, 2011.”

The position to be filled is being advertised and the college will be taking applications through Friday, Oct. 8.

Any interim hired will be able to apply for the permanent position, which is planned to be advertised in spring of 2011.

“During the month of October the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs will be covered by the deans in an acting capacity,” said Burke-Kelly.

Assignments are as follow:

Week 1: Oct. 1 through Oct. 10 –  Dr. Donna Mae Villanueva

Week 2: Oct. 11 through Oct. 17 – Paul Whalen

Week 3: Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 – Barbara Anderson
