Food trucks temporarily replace cafeteria

Without a cafeteria, Pierce College has employed the services of several catering trucks to allow students the option to eat on campus. People are now, however, beginning to question whether or not the available food is healthy or not.

The items sold at these catering trucks range from freshly cook breakfast meals such as a plate with scrambled eggs, toasted bread and bacon, to Mexican food and customizable hamburgers.

“Are you hungry? I got breakfast burritos,” said Tracy Tuso, owner of the “Deli Fresh” truck at Pierce College.

In spite of convenience, these trucks still raise questions about the nutritional value of their products.

“By law, trucks don’t carry a nutritional chart,” Tuso said.

The types of food that were sold in the Country Cafe are very similar to those sold in the trucks.

One noted difference is that in the food trucks they serve your meal, as opposed to self service as was done in the cafeteria.

“I don’t like the taste of the food trucks,” said Naida M., 24, psychology major.

On the other side, Glenys Vila, a 19-year-old nursing major, said that “the food is just delicious” as she enjoyed french fries that she purchased from one of the trucks.

The Deli Fresh truck, which parks in front of the Student Services Building, sells sandwiches, chips,  sodas and energy drinks.

“Our healthy menu includes turkey sandwiches, fresh fruit plates and salads served all day,” said Tuso. “Deli Fresh arrives on campus at 7 a.m. and we leave at 3 p.m.”

Close to the Business Administration Building, there are more food trucks that sell similar meals.

“The food trucks are more affordable than the cafeteria; they should keep these trucks.” said Vila.
