“Jews in Hollywood” series attracts students

Laughter and applause echoed through the Great Hall as director Daniel Zagayer, 24, showcased a variety of his short films starting with “Jews in Hollywood” shown Thursday.

Zagayer, a former Pierce College student, is a senior at University of Southern California (USC) and is currently pursuing a bachelors’s degree in cinematic arts.  He has directed more than 50 short films and has created his own production company, LAWV Chillers, with the help of long time high school buddies.

“Our films were based on personal experiences and were grounded in reality,” said Zagayer.  “We were just bored and simply wanted to show how life was like for twenty something year old guys in the Valley,”

Zagayer also spoke to students in a Q & A after he presented his short films.

“Film making is not an individual art, it’s a collaborative art,” said Zagayer, pointing out an important factor for students who are aspiring to become film directors. ”The talent of a director is measured by how well they can collaborate.”

Furthermore, he encouraged students to be creative with their work and focus on everything that services the story and character.

“I thought it was a nice group who appreciated the films,” said Sara Kheel, Programming Director of the Hillel Club.

The program was just the first of the “Jews in Hollywood” series sponsored by the Hillel club in the hope of spreading awareness of the Jewish community to students.
