Two professors join Pierce faculty

Two new professors – one each for the Media Arts and Modern Languages departments – have been added to the faculty roster this semester to replace two outgoing instructors.

The Media Arts Department added cinema professor Karin Stellwagen to their team, after the previous professor – who had worked at Pierce for two years – did not get their contract renewed, according to Academic Senate President Tom Rosdahl.

French professor Anne La Barbu joined the faculty of the Modern Languages Department after her predecessor left Pierce last semester to teach at another college, according to Rosdahl.

New professors at Pierce have a 4-year probationary period in compliance with school district policy. During this period, professors have a one-year contract with the school and an evaluation at the end of the year, according to Rosdahl.

After the evaluation, professors may have an opportunity for another 1-year contract with an evaluation at the end. This cycle repeats until the probationary period is over, said to Rosdahl.

“Professors are considered tenured after four years,” Rosdahl said.
