Free H.I.V. testing to be given on campus

Free Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV) testing will be given on campus March 26 to 29 in honor of HIV/AIDS Awareness Week.

The testing site will be located in Parking Lot 1, and available from 2 to 7 p.m. on March 26, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 27.

Early detection of HIV is vital to long-term treatment.

“[HIV testing is] a way to know if you’re safe or not,” sophomore Jose Bermudez said. “It’s a good thing that you don’t even have to pay anything, you can just go and make sure you are clean,” Bermudez said.

The testing is not only free but it is quick and no blood test is required, Director of Health Center Beth Benne said.

Two forms of testing will be available. One will be done through a cheeck swab, and the other through a finger prick. Students will receive the results within 20 to 30 minutes.

Students who are tested will also be able to speak with counselors during their testing experience

The operations are government funded and reimbursed, Benne said.

The Health Center will also be handing out free condoms during HIV/AIDS Awareness Week.

“When you have a [school] population that is sexually active you need to ask if they are being safe and if not, are they being smart and getting tested,” Beth Benne said.
