LACCD approves safety pledge day
The Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees approved a motion to declare Sept. 19 to be ‘No Texting and Driving Pledge Day’ along with the Strategic Master Plan for Pierce College during their regularly scheduled meetings inside the district office on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Trustee for Glendale College Anita Quinonez-Gabrielian moved to pass this annual awareness day to remind students to put away their cell phones for safe driving, or for someone to download a phone application that would send automatic text messages to someone to let them know that you are driving.
75 percent of teens admit that texting is common among their friends, even though over 100,000 crashes are attributed to someone who was texting while driving, according to www.itcanwait.org.
“[Our goal] is to make [the danger] as public as possible– as bad as drinking,” Quinonez-Gabrielian said.
The campaign works alongside AT&T’s “It Can Wait” program and she has significant history with the company.
“Anita is Executive Director of External Affairs for AT&T in Los Angeles,” according to the Glendale Community College website. “In her thirty year career in the telecommunications industry, she has mastered positions in network engineering, project management, and government relations.”
The board also approved Pierce College’s Strategic Master Plan for this school year, and the topics of this plan can be found on the Pierce College website.
This long-awaited plan was edited many times by the Academic Senate before finally becoming a guideline on how to find more efficient ways of maximizing Pierce College’s curriculum.
The LACCD Board of Trustees will next meet at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2012 at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
