East Los Angeles College gun scare heightens Southland school security

East Los Angeles College was evacuated early Thursday, May 16, after someone called California Highway Patrol, saying that he was armed and heading to a college campus in Monterey Park, according to ELAC’s Campus News.

As a result, over a dozen Monterey Park schools and colleges were put on lockdown. A suspect was taken into custody at Santa Monica College, but many schools have heightened their security since.

Pierce officials sent an email out, stating:

One of our sister colleges, East Los Angeles College, will remain closed for the day following a law enforcement emergency.

The emergency is over and Pierce College remains open and safe. During the emergency period, Sheriff Personnel at Pierce College were on alert status patrolling the campus.

Again,  Pierce College remains open and safe today, May 16, 2013.
