Athletic Department to host food drive

The Pierce College Athletic department will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

From 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. students and staff can drop off items in the South Gym that will be placed on the stands of Ken Stanley Court to resemble a crowd watching a sporting event.

All of the food will be donated to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity).

The idea of the food drive first came to Athletic Director Bob Lofrano when he saw that California State University, Northridge had placed can food donations for MEND on the stairs of the Oviatt Library.

Participants are encouraged to donate dry pasta, peanut butter, cereal, and canned tuna during Tuesday’s food drive.

“You know we give them that on Tuesday, maybe someone is having it for Thanksgiving on Thursday,” Lofrano said.

While there is no numerical goal set for the amount of food being donated Lofrano hopes that it will encourage young people to get more involved with community work.

He plans to organize a similar event at the end of the spring semester and challenges the whole school to get involved.
