Poetry contest offered for National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month, a poetry reading video contest and an essay writing contest will be conducted at Pierce this April according to Paula Paggi, library department chair.

Students who submit their videos via the Pierce College Library Facebook page will have a chance to win $20 Amazon gift cards. Prizes will be given for “Most Creative”, “Most ‘liked’”, “Most Enthusiastic”, “Most Poem in 20 Seconds” and “Most Overall Poem”. Winners will be contacted through Facebook.

Students can either recite poems they’ve written, or read their favorite poems of other writers. Hip hop is also an acceptable form. Videos must be between 15-20 seconds long and can be submitted via Instagram or Facebook. The deadline for the video contest is Friday, April 25.

In addition to the Poetry Reading Video Contest there will also be an Essay Writing Contest. Students who submit an essay about their favorite poem will have a chance to win a Grand Prize of $150, and runners-up will receive $50.

Submissions are due no later than April 30 at 8 p.m. Essays can be submitted at the Library’s Reference Desk.
