Tennis plays better in singles

The Pierce College tennis team struggled to play in partners losing against Bakersfield College on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at home.

The Brahmas have now lost four out of five matches on the season.

Its only win of the season came against Cypress College on Friday, Feb. 20. Pierce won the match 8-1.

In the match against Bakersfield the Brahmas had good performances in singles but had trouble playing in doubles, which resulted in a 6-3 loss.

“In my singles I played smart,” said freshman Joshua Correa. “Doubles, I am learning to acquaint myself and my partner pretty well.”

For the team, playing in singles is a top priority when it come to games, but they hope to improve and communicate better with a partner, according to Correa.

In a close match, freshman Nick Nerhulas faced Bakersfield’s Austin Lee.

To break the 1-1 tie, Nerhulas and Lee played another set where Nerhulas struggled with over hitting and sending the ball out of bounds. Lee won the match 6-5, 6-4.

“Chemistry is different,” Correa said. “Some people are better at singles and some people are better at doubles.”

Bakersfield head coach Nick Jacobs was happy with his team’s performance.

“I felt like this is by far the best match we have played all year,” Jacobs said.

In its first game, the Brahmas faced Mt. San Antonio College and lost 7-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

They went on to lose 8-1 to Cerritos College and 8-1 against Glendale Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 19, respectively.

Pierce continues to look for its first win of the season.

“I have given all of them the things that they needed to do, and some of them did it,” said head coach Rajeev Datt.

Pierce looks to improve its game plan and season record as they face Ventura College at home on Thursday, Feb. 26.
