Con: No need for more tutors

Adding more student tutors to classes is an unnecessary addition to classes that don’t need it.

Classes that already have student tutors in the Tutoring Center vary from English to Biology. There is no need to have more student tutors. Some students still don’t know they can use the Tutoring Center so until it is know that it is a resource students can use there is no use of adding more. There is already enough tutors waiting for students to schedule an appointment.

The History 12 class that I took had one tutors for us to use and he would come in during the week and say that he will be waiting in the center for students to walk in. And when he showed up at the end of the week, he would say that no one from the class came in. The teacher didn’t enforce the student to use this resource, she just told us that our grade will reflect on the knowledge we know. I did fine in that class, and I didn’t use the tutor.

The most challenging class like English, Math and Science already have tutors waiting each week according to the tutoring center website. From the hours of 9 to 5 there is a tutors in each of the hour slots from Monday to Friday. Except Friday is from 10 to 2. If student needs a tutor then all they have to do is just walk into the Tutoring Center and wait for tutor to see you.

There was another class that I took, Communications 101, and the professor had a problem with tutor for communications. The tutor did not teach the student that way the professor wanted for her class. She had students turn in assignment in wrong she would ask them why they didn’t they follow her instructions. The student would then say the tutor told me this and she would have to reteach them the process of writing of speech.

It also make it difficult when the student tutor isn’t even from Pierce as according to the Academic Success webpage, the tutors can also be from CSUN. So if a CSUN student is helping you with an assignments that are from Pierce classes. Academic Success should not hire from other colleges unless they can match the class’ syllabus and requirements.

If we hire more tutors that will required the college will need to spend out of the budget. That budget could be used for different part of campus that need it the most. Tutors aren’t really used until the end the semester where they are needed most.

So instead of hiring extra full time tutors the center should be hiring a sort of seasonal tutors so they can have extra staff during the final. Training the tutors they have to match the class’ lessons is another way to make that students are learning the way the professor is teaching them.so that when a student walks into the tutoring center they aren’t going to be thrown off by the tutors is teaching them and know exactly what the teacher wants.
