Aids week

Patrick Lising

An HIV 101 seminar will take place today in the Life Science building from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. as part of the HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, sponsored by the Student Health Center.

This is an opportunity for the uninformed to learn a very important bit of life-saving knowledge.

“I think it’s great exposure for students to learn the reality of the disease and the lives it takes, especially here on a college campus,” said student Meredith Rice.

Other events will include classroom speakers and a four-day session of free testing – no needles involved – available to students.

The testing process will take place in front of the campus center.

“It takes about two minutes. A swab is placed inside your cheek and you should have the results back within 20 to 30 minutes,” said Beth Benne, R.N., director of the Student Health Center.

The actual testing will be conducted March 12 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; March 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and March 16 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The testing services, as well as the HIV 101 seminar, will be provided by The Tarzana Research Group.

“I think the school definitely needs to promote the event more because people don’t seem to go searching for answers and this is something that really shouldn’t go unnoticed,” remarked student Katie Corcoran, 20.
