Hot food, cool music

Linda Coburn

The cafeteria may become the coolest place on campus, at least on Wednesday evenings, with “Live Wednesday” debuting tonight from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“Lots of people have asked us to offer the kind of things they can find at the Freudian Sip,” said Linda Brown, cafeteria manager. “But we just don’t have the ability to install computers and that sort of thing.”

Recognizing that there is no place on campus offering musical entertainment on a regular basis, cafeteria student worker and musician Mike Goodman came up with the idea of “Live Wednesday.”

“I want there to be a synergy between music and the cafeteria,” he said.

“Rubbish,” a contemporary folk/rock band fronted by Goodman will be one of the first performers in this weekly event. “I know a lot of bands and a number of them have said they want to play,” Goodman said. “Our goal is to offer quality music.”

Performers with an itch to strut their stuff are invited to contact Brown or Goodman in person on Wednesdays between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. They are especially looking for the type of acts that will provide an appropriate ambiance for people who are eating and relaxing.

If free music isn’t enough, the cafeteria is offering discounted fountain beverages with the purchase of any food item. Performers will be given cafeteria food vouchers.

“We think this is a Win-Win-Win,” said Goodman. “It’s a ‘win’ for the campus to have quality entertainment; it’s a ‘win’ for the performers who get a place to play; and it’s a ‘win’ for the cafeteria to increase its customer base.”
