The Pierce College men’s volleyball team won 15-13 in the fifth set of Friday night’s game against the Orange Coast College Pirates in the first home game of the season.
The game was kept close by the Pirates who are traditionally good and “always have a lot of talent on their team,” according to Pierce’s head coach Adam Black.
But the night belonged to Pierce, who came out with the win after an intense game.
Pierce is now 2-0 having beaten Palomar in their season opener, and are “off on the right foot,” said Black. “We’re playing pretty well as a team and all six guys on the court are doing pretty well out there,” he said.
The night was full of substitutions for the Brahmas making it clear that the team is still getting a feel for the right combination on the court, but their performance proved they are full of talented individuals.
This was the sixth game for Orange Coast, who are now 4-2. They are optimistic about the rest of the season, but “it is way to early to tell” just how well the team will do, said their head coach, Chuck Cutenese.
Middle hitter Joe Papadapolous had a great night of blocking for the Brahma’s. Orange Coast’s Scott Sankey also had a great game helping to lead his team through all five sets.
The Brahma’s future is looking bright, and Black anticipates the men will be “working hard and fighting hard and paying attention to detail,” along with following their motto, “give nothing, earn everything,” throughout the season.
The next home game will be today at 7:00 p.m. against Irvine Valley College in the South Gym.
