The Pierce College baseball team continued their winning streak when they defeated Bakersfield College Thursday at home 7-6 and 7-5 on March 14.

At Thursday’s game, Bakersfield lead 1-0 for the first two innings until Willie Cabrera, sophomore second baseman, hit a double that brought Andrew Tapia, freshman outfielder, home for Pierce’s first run of the game at the top of the third inning.

Jordan Ott, freshman outfielder, hit a double in the fifth inning, keeping the Brahmas in the lead.

With Bakersfield trailing behind by one run, Pierce needed a secure lead for a win.

In the top of the seventh inning, Cabrera hit the only home run of the game for Pierce, his third of the season.

“We played well as a team,” said Cabrera. “Our pitchers got the job done for us and we made plays when we needed to.”

Trevor Andrews, sophomore catcher, scored off a single from Tim Poyer, freshman outfielder, giving the Brahmas a three run lead at the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore pitcher Greg Acheatel almost pitched a complete game for the Brahmas, but when Bakersfield scored two runs in the ninth inning, he was replaced by Darren Norris, freshman pitcher.

Acheatel threw seven strike outs in the game, totaling 49 for the season.

With only three outs needed, Norris came in striking out two batters and forcing one to ground out, securing the victory for the Brahmas.

This week, Pierce will be battling against Glendale Community College on Thursday at Glendale and the next home game is Saturday when Pierce hosts Glendale at 1 p.m. on Joe Kelly Field.
