Part of the Pierce College mission statement reads, “…to ensure that students achieve their educational, career and personal goals.” “Personal” may be the most important part of the mission. An Orange County Register editorial, published Dec. 4, 2006, is infused with accusations that degrade and belittle all the work put forth by the staff of this and other community colleges.

‘Truth’ be told for Earth week
As a prelude to Earth Week, Pierce College’s Associated Student Organization will be screening Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” tomorrow in the Music Building, Room 3400 at 3 p.m. “Our goal is to create greater awareness about global warming,” said Abraham White, ASO president.
Textbook prices at the mercy of professors
We applaud the Pierce College Bookstore for its efforts to reduce the high cost of textbooks and we strongly encourage all faculty members to fully participate in the process. At a recent meeting of the Academic Policy Committee, which is comprised of all Pierce department chairs, bookstore representatives made a professional and compelling presentation, identifying several ways that faculty can have a direct impact on the cost of textbooks.
Art Gallery exhibits Hogarth classics
A reception to unveil the new exhibit of William Hogarth engravings and etchings at the Pierce College Art Gallery will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tonight. The exhibit, from a donation by Sherman Oaks resident Ruth Globersonis is entitled “Life and Times in Hogarth’s London.
Recycling equals cha-chlng
The ENCORE and Oasis programs are the newest supporters of a printer cartridge recycling effort. By recycling empty printer cartridges, students can help support the programs, which are a partnership that works together to provide lifelong learning to the older adult community.
Donate Life: bringing miracles from tragedies
Jerry Guon and Darrell Robb have been friends for years. They both attended Pierce College-Guon in the 1950s when it was still the Clarence W. Pierce College of Agriculture, and Robb in the 1980s, studying computer science. But that’s not where they met.
New trustee selected today
A new Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) board trustee will be appointed today to replace Michael Waxman, who resigned from office and relocated to Washington, D.C. Waxman was the former president of the LACCD board of trustees. Waxman left the board at a very critical point for the LACCD because the board will also need to choose a new chancellor when Darroch “Rocky” Young will leave his top post in August.
P.S. You’ve been rejected
“We appreciate your interest in the University of California, Santa Barbara. “We have evaluated your application for admission for the fall 2007 quarter and regret that we cannot offer you admission to UC Santa Barbara at this time.” The letter was pleasant, yet patronizing; rejection usually is.
Accreditation visit success
After more than a year of preparation that involved hundreds of faculty, staff and students and an intensive three-day visit by a group of colleagues, Pierce College was given a positive evaluation by a visiting accreditation team. The study was performed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) team under the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which visited Pierce during the week of March 19.
Textbooks laid to rest in ASO protest
Books piled up in a heap around a cardboard tombstone as speakers debated the soaring prices of textbooks on campus. The Associated Students Organization’s “Textbook Funeral” on March 27 brought together faculty and administrative staff in a symbolic protest of textbook publishing companies.
