“What the Hell”

Marti Zamorano

“What the hell?” Why is there such a low rate of student and staff involvement at Pierce? People on campus either don’t have the time or don’t want to be involved.

Pierce is not a four-year university complete with dorms and an ongoing campus life, but we do have more than 100 disciplines being taught to more than 18,000 students. We have a calendar full of events, exhibits and concerts. Not to mention great sports, clubs, lectures and other activities.

Unfortunately, even though Pierce has a lot to offer, many of the venues go without significant student or staff presence.

You can make a difference to those who spend countless hours and funds setting up these events.

At the recent “Missing Students” display there was a dismal representation of Pierce students and staff. Where was everyone? This display and others are for everyone at Pierce to enjoy. There were more “Missing Students” than students present for this exhibit.?

Our campus is spread over 427 acres, and I find myself amazed when I find out that people haven’t seen parts of it. Some people are completely unaware that we have a farm with live animals, an Equestrian Center, an arboretum and even our own newspaper.

This column for instance, Don’t students or staff on campus have questions about things that are going on at Pierce? Does anyone see things at Pierce that strike them as odd or funny?

I was shocked to receive no response to this column, which has run for several weeks now. In seemed to me that anyone could find the time to write an e-mail or leave a voicemail. Doesn’t anyone like the idea of free money? We have increased the prize for submitting an idea to “What the Hell?” to a $15 gift certificate for the remaining two issues.

Both students and staff are welcome to get involved and ask questions. Perhaps someone else has the same questions. Just by asking you may help inform others.

This is our school. Get involved and take advantage of all the resources, events and entertainment Pierce has to offer.
