Brahmas taken down by Glendale

Pierce College, like the weather on Saturday, had its ‘hots and colds,’ finishing cold. The Brahmas lost to Glendale College in front of a crowd of more than 400 people, 34-14.

“Right now, they’re a better team,” said Pierce coach Efrain Martinez.

At the end of the first quarter, the Brahmas were down 7-0.

Although Glendale scored more points to take a 21-0 lead, the game seem to get warmer for the Brahmas when the crowd was thrilled by a devastating tackle from linebacker Steven Johnson that had the Vaquero player hurting on the sidelines.

“It made a statement,” said Brahma wide receiver Michael Cooper.

The hard hit had the fans cheering for more and Pierce gave them what they were hoping for with two touchdowns of their own, closing the gap to 21-14, to end the first half.

“We had the momentum,” added Martinez.

Returning to the second half, Pierce lost its mojo.

“We came out and we dropped a pass,” said Martinez. “It stopped the momentum. That’s a sign of a young team.”

Pierce wouldn’t score again.

“We were trying to play to their level,” added Martinez. “We are a year away.”

“…from not being an underdog,” Cooper added. “It all went down, it was all a mental thing.”

Glendale coach John Cicuto said, “They have a very good team. Coach Martinez has done a great job.”

Martinez is hopeful about the future. “We are excited. The future looks bright.”
