On a bitterly cold day, it was business as usual for the Pierce College Women’s soccer team as they recorded a 3-0 win against LA Mission College Friday.Going into the match, Pierce had a record of 4-0-3, while Mission’s record was 0-7-1.The Pierce team continued their winning ways in front of a supportive home crowd of just less than 100. Yet even the win wasn’t enough to satisfy Pierce Head Coach Adolfo Perez.”I think it was disappointing. Mission’s not a very strong team. I think we could’ve done better,” said Perez. In their previous game, they were held to a goalless draw by Santa Monica. This time, they found the net once in the first half and twice in the second.Perez commented that the improvement made in this match, when compared with the last, was “because we scored.”Emanuel Martins, L.A. Mission College head coach, remained positive about his team’s display.”I thought the girls played well. We had a couple of defensive breakdowns that created the goals,” Martins said. “From where we’ve been, we’re coming along and improving every game. So yeah, we played well.” The game saw some major tactical changes due to one of Pierce’s best players, Amanda Bernal, being ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury in the previous game. Coach Perez is attempting to fill the gap by trying out other players in her place. “We’re trying to fill a spot. So we’re trying to play a lot of players here to make up for her loss,” he said. Pierce defender Heather Painter was pushed into a more advanced role as a striker in an attempt to try and find the net with more ease. It’ would prove to be a good move, as the makeshift striker would not only set up the first goal, but also grab a brace (2 goals) for herself. Painter described how scoring 2 goals felt, saying it was “very exciting. It’s the first time I played forward for the entire season.” Painter, normally one of Pierce’s main defenders, was surprised when she was told to move up front, admitting that “it was a surprise move.” Pierce controlled much of the possession in the first half and eventually grabbed their opening goal in the 38th minute. Some good work by Painter outside the box as she slipped in Forward Yasmine Yahoum who dribbled into the penalty area and fired her powerful effort in the top right hand corner to give Pierce the 1-0 lead. Their second goal came in the 57th minute when Painter had stolen the ball off of the last defender, dribbled into the box and smashed her shot into the top left corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Pierce College 2-0 LA Mission College. Painter would grab her next and Pierce’s third in the 62nd minute when they were awarded a penalty. Painter was fouled in the box, stepped up to take the spot kick and dispensed it easily into the roof of the net leaving the keeper with no chance and completing her brace. It was a positive result for the Brahmas as they head into their next game away at Bakersfield College Tuesday at 4 p.m. followed by Glendale College at home on Friday at 4 p.m.
