Rough match brings tough draw for Pierce soccer (corrected)

A rough physical away game against Santa Monica College ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw for the Pierce College Women’s soccer team Oct 2. Pierce had many chances to win the game with 22 shots on goal, but was unable to hit the back of the net. “I was really frustrated,” said Pierce forward Stephanie Weaver. “We should’ve won the game.” Pierce Head Coach Adolfo Perez said, “It was probably one of the worst results of the year, to be honest.” Pierce was dealt a massive blow during the match when the team’s top scorer, Amanda Bernal, had to be taken off the field after a rough tackle with an opposing player in the 65th minute. It would turn out to be devastating for the player, as she’d also be ruled out for the rest of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. Bernal, a freshman, is the team’s leading scorer with six goals this season. Her presence on the team and on the field will be missed by her fellow teammates and coach.”It was a big loss because she’s a great player for the team,” said Pierce defender Heather Painter.Even with the loss of Bernal, Pierce pushed Santa Monica until the full-time whistle, having the majority of their chances to score near the end of the game.Coach Perez wasn’t too happy with the outcome of the game.”We lost one of our best players for the rest of the year,” he said. “We had 22 shots and didn’t score any.”Looking forward to the next match, Perez admitted that some things would have to change, considering Bernal’s extended absence from the team and what the team will have to work on against their next opponents.”We’re going to have to try somebody else after losing her for the whole year,” he said. “We’ve got to score our chances.”The team’s overall record is 7-1-4.Pierce’s next set of matches includes a home game against L.A. Mission College Friday at 4 p.m. followed by an away game at Bakersfield College Oct. 9 and then a home game against Glendale College Oct. 12.
