The annual Fall Dance Concert is around the corner and auditions for dancers will begin Sunday in the Dance Studio, NG 5601. For 23 years, dance instructor Marian Weiser has orchestrated the Fall and Spring Dance Concerts, which are composed of various dances from around the world. Student choreographers and guest dancers showcase dances from a diverse selection of countries. Students of all dancing levels are encouraged to participate.”We try to keep [The Fall Dance Concert] as traditional as possible,” said Weiser, “with custom costume and dance.” The auditions for this year’s Fall Concert will take place Sunday from 9 a.m. to around 2 p.m. During this time, each student choreographer will have 12 to 15 minutes to present the most difficult part of their dance to students and give those auditioning for the dance a chance to try the steps.Weiser stresses that the student choreographers are very skilled, and dancers of all skill levels should audition.”The event is a lot of fun,” said Kabrina Lee Feickert, Weiser’s production assistant of two years and costume designer.”We can always use more dancers, and encourage all students to audition and participate,” Feickert said.Currently, there are 13 dances scheduled for audition. Students will be auditioning for roles in dances from America (Line and Quad), Bulgaria, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Romania, Spain, West Africa, Nigeria, Azerbaijan/Georgia and the Philippines.Along with these, the actual Fall Concert will have seven professional performance groups performing Balinese, Irish, Mexican, Russian, Tahitian and Ukrainian dances. There are a few instructors who will also take part in the event.Denise Gibson, adjunct instructor of physical education, will perform the American Swing Dance with her Dance Troupe from Moorpark College.Hiroko Hojo, also a physical education instructor, will be performing with the Balinese Dance Company. The student choreographers will be assisted by Sandra “Sandy” Allman, physical education instructor at Pierce and former member of AMAN, as well as experienced choreographers Jacqueline Eusanio (former member of AMAN) and Dolce Capadocia (former owner of a Filipino dance company, currently a teacher at CSUN).While students are encouraged to audition for every dance, each student may perform in a maximum of three dances, as rehearsals for the dances will have multiple dances being rehearsing at once.Students chosen to dance will become part of the Pierce College Dance Troupe and will enroll in a class for one, two or four units, depending on the number of dances they decide to undertake. Students performing in three dances may enroll in the one unit class if they are unable to meet the financial obligations for the four unit class. Those students not picked for dances can still become part of the concert crew and assist with ticket sales, flier development and stage production. The concert crew also qualify to receive up to four units for their assistance.Rehearsals for the Fall Dance Concert will be every Sunday after the auditions. Rehearsal for each dance is expected to last 90 minutes. Rehearsals begin at 8:30 a.m. There are also outside rehearsals occasionally. The Fall Dance Concert goes into action Dec. 15 and 16.
