The women’s soccer team is the Western State College Southern Division Champions again after the Brahmas beat the Bakersfield College Renegades 2-0 Nov. 2 in a near-flawless game. This win puts Pierce’s season record at 16-1-4, putting them in a position for the playoffs for the state championship. “We played very organized,” said head coach Adolfo Perez. “This is our third championship in a row, and our first at home, so it means a lot.” “This is our fifth win in seven years,” said assistant coach Tony Ortega. “Everyone did great. Now we’re going to the state tournament to see who will be king of California.” The game began with both teams playing at an equal level, until No. 11 Patty Garcia scored a goal eleven minutes into the first half. Afterwards, the Renegades began to visibly lose their momentum. Pierce was awarded several free throws and free kicks, until No. 19 Heather Painter scored the second and final goal of the game, thirteen minutes into the second half. The Brahmas then held the Renegades at bay long enough to win the game. Despite the excitement of the win, both players and coaches were self-critical. “We could have scored that penalty kick,” grumbled assistant coach Tony Ortega, referring to a penalty kick early in the first half which sailed over the net. “I’m so psyched,” said goalie Natasha Jackson. “We played really well, and coach Perez’s ‘Go get ’em, Tiger’ attitude doesn’t hurt.” The Brahmas still have two more games to play in the playoffs before the season ends. The next game is Nov. 16.
