Congratulations to the Pierce College women’s volleyball team for their successful 2007 season.
They finished the regular season with 25 wins and three losses, which put them tied at top of the state along with El Camino College for the most wins.
The volleyball squad, although it changes faces from year to year, has been consistently strong since head coach Nabil Mardini was hired in 1999.
Evidence of his successful coaching include: Since 2001, he has led the team to a 140-30 overall record.
The team has not lost a home game in more than six years.
They have won the Southern Division of the Western State Conference (WSC) seven consecutive years, including this year.
From 2004 to 06 they advanced to the Elite Eight (quarterfinals) of the state playoffs, and last year volleyball team made it to state finals.
Although this year’s volleyball team lost early in the playoffs, it is as good as last year’s squad.
The only difference is they lost a crucial game earlier in the playoffs.
Sophomore star and WSC Most Valuable Player Ashley Lugo-Brown’s leadership and stats will surely be missed.
She led the conference with 342 kills and was second with 27 solo blocks.
As Lugo-Brown heads to a four-year institution, she has set-up the ball to a talented pool of freshmen such as Janet Alvarado, first-team all-conference, Terry Soltani and Savannah Thomas, second team all-conference, just to name a few.
Other all-conference sophomores include Tara Henn and Sandra Posada who were named first-team and Jenna Novelli who was named to the second team.
Once again, congratulations on your successful 2007 volleyball season and we’re looking forward the future.
