Pierce meat supply
The mistreatment of cows by the Hallmark Meat Packing Co., of Chino, may have had the public worried – but there is nothing wrong with Pierce College’s meat supply, according to college officials. A video released by the Humane Society of the United States early this year raised many concerns regarding school meat supply.
Academic Senate Meeting
The college will add $2.4 million to its budget by the end of the year as a result of overall growth, according to an announcement by Pierce College President Robert Garber at Monday’s Academic Senate meeting. However, Garber said the budget is “looking grim,” explaining that recent cuts made by the state in K-12 education spending will ultimately affect the community colleges as well.
Volleyball scholarships
Three women’s volleyball players have been awarded scholarships: Ashley Lugo-Brown, Terra Henn and Jenna Novelli. Lugo-Brown will be attending Cal State Long Beach in the fall, Novelli is already attending Truman State University in Missouri and Henn is deciding between scholarships to Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Chico, University of Louisiana and Wayland Baptist in Texas.
Epic baseball story
Pierce College locked horns with the Oilers of West Los Angeles College on Saturday at Joe Kelley Field and erupted for 15 runs, just enough to edge out a 15-14 win in a thriller of a game. Nick Devian led the way with a walk-off base hit up the middle in the last of the ninth.
Electronics program sparks futures
Nestled in the confines of the Pierce College Village, the electronics program is yet another display of academic achievement found on campus. Emboldened by a recent departure from the decades-old bungalows, the program’s professors strive to provide students with the opportunity to succeed in the constantly changing field of electronics.
Moodle takes the edge off class
Say goodbye to sprinting to class after a long night of procrastination – for many students, handing in assignments will be just a tap of the keyboard and a click of the mouse away. In almost 275 courses, more than 60 instructors at Pierce College are using Moodle to display course materials for students, according to the Moodle site for Pierce.
Six schools take on new superintendent
A new superintendent of instruction for the mayor’s Partnership for Los Angeles Schools has been recently appointed. Angela Bass, a top administrator in the San Diego Unified School District, was chosen by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to oversee the six campuses included in his partnership.
An encore for wisdom
The topic of discussion for the ENCORE/Oasis lecture series for the week of March 6 was on a very controversial subject: “Should We Be Allowed to Sell Our Organs: Ethical Ramifications.” The lecture program hosts a meeting every week in the Campus Center to discuss issues that pertain to everyday life.
