Hard-hitting victory ends baseball team’s 8-loss streak

The Brahmas defeated the Vaqueros of Glendale Community College after an eight-game losing streak, with a final score of 13-3.

“We’ve been playing better,” said head coach Joe Arnold. “If you just gauge it by wins and losses, it’s not necessarily a true indication of progression of the team.”

There had been issues with the pitching, defense and offense.

“As long as the effort is there, which it has been, we play a hard nine innings,” Arnold said.

Center fielder Calvin Culver was on base twice throughout the game, scoring an RBI and hitting a home run in the fourth inning.

“I just went out there and did what I could to help out my team,” Culver said. Culver’s main focus right now is not on his recent acceptance to USC, but on playing and winning for Pierce.

The Brahmas’ main rivals include College of the Canyons, Valley College, Mission College and Glendale. This was their second defeat against Glendale this season.

Designated hitter Will Myrick helped out his team when he hit a home run in the seventh inning.

“We were on a little drought for awhile and we just broke it,” he said.

Pitcher Carter Whitman shut down the Glendale offense in five innings and hopes that in the near future he will be the starter.

“Hopefully we can put something on a roll,” Whitman said of their victory. “The key to success is just playing as a team.”

Winning or losing the game is not the issue for Arnold; he is just concerned about playing correctly and having the right attitude.

“We’re still going to make errors,” he stated. “Baseball’s that way.” Making the playoffs would be a real accomplishment, but Arnold just wants the team to play better.

According to Arnold, the team has had a lot of development, with good defense and timely hits. He feels that as far as post season is concerned, their chances are slim to none, but said, “I don’t know if slim has left the building yet. Anything can happen.”
