Backing athletics with brownies
FANS in the Stands, organized by Barbara Anderson, professor and chair of speech and communication, is letting faculty at Pierce College know that attending sports events at Pierce can get them a taste of her homemade brownies. Anderson explained the importance of encouraging others to attend the sports events.
The search for private funding
In the wake of proposed sweeping cuts in state education funding, California community colleges are turning to private sources to supplement their stagnating, sometimes even shrinking, operating budgets. “Like California’s four-year public universities, our community colleges have realized they can no longer solely rely on state funding or bond measures for financial support,” said Dr.
Fees waived for majority of students
It’s not too late to apply for a 2007-08 Board of Governors Fee Waiver at the Financial Aid Office, which awards eligible students free tuition for the entire academic year – even if the semesters were taken before they received the aid. If a student is awarded a 2007-08 waiver by June 30, it will reimburse them for classes taken since Summer 2007.
Shelter from the fires
The raging fires that took place in October and November were no match for the Boots and Saddles club, who came riding in on their white horses – which they like to call trailers. Being honored by the city of Los Angeles , Pierce College and members of the Boots and Saddles Club received certificates and pins at the Equestrian Center April 11 for their volunteer work during the fires last fall.
Things you learned from TV
Don’t always believe what you see on television. I’ve heard it, and said it, for years. But recently, something happened that made me reconsider whether I’ve actually adhered to this tidbit of advice. On Thursday morning, I woke up, rolled over, opened my eyes and looked straight down the barrel of a gun.
Half century of Dodger glory

Naked, exposed and far from prudish, the California Video Screening Series: L.A. Video Uncensored, screened at The Getty Center, lived up to its title. From March 15 to June 8, The Getty is putting on an exhibition in the Harold M. Williams Auditorium, featuring a sequence of short films produced from 1975 to 2004.

Crossing over the ‘Bridge to Success’
While recent research reveals that roughly half of all high school seniors in the 50 largest cities in the U.S. don’t graduate, Pierce College continues to try to persuade students who may have left their education early to return to school. A study released April 1 by America’s Promise Alliance found that in the 2003-04 school year, the graduation rate in Los Angeles was at 43.
