Jack Scott, former Pasadena City College president, was named chancellor of the California Community Colleges Thursday.

Scott will replace Diane Woodruff Jan. 1, when his term as state senator ends. Woodruff has been interim chancellor since July 2007.

Scott will take over the 109-campus CCC in a critical time of the state budget crisis.

In an e-mail, Woodruff said, “There is nobody I know who has a better background to be successful in this position.”

Scott was president of Cypress College for eight years, beginning in 1978, before taking over PCC until 1995. He then served as a state assemblyman from 1996 to 2000.

Since 2000 he has represented the districts of Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and parts of L.A. as a state senator. He has addressed many issues, including quality of teachers in California classrooms, strengthening vocational education programs and creating new funding system for CCC.
