Health teacher rocks stage

Many believe teachers are supposed to be the equivalent to the characters one would find in a convalescent home: old, rude, cranky and smelly. Students may never imagine teachers as young and free-spirited.

Diane Kelly, health professor at Pierce College, is one half of the duo Jayla, a Los Angeles-based folk band.

Meeting 11 years ago at a college in Florida, Kelly and her bandmate Nikki Thompson started getting air play on local radio stations.

Jayla’s debut album, “Faithfully Alive,” came out last August and is available online and at their shows.

The meaning behind Jayla is quite unique.

“Jayla is a female name, Kelly said. “We made up the meaning, but it means ‘positive energy.’ We like to think whenever we perform, the show has a lot of positive energy and when everyone leaves, they’ll be happy from the experience. Our intentions are to inspire.”

Kelly said she gets her inspiration from “God, people, laughter and nature. Musically, Bon Jovi, The Beatles…it’s a big mix.”

“We’re also influenced by people who have the courage and bravery to be themselves,” she said.

“I’m influenced by life and passion,” Thompson said. “Musically, I’m influenced by Sheryl Crow and Prince.”

Jayla has an 18-and-over show tomorrow night at Aura Nightclub in Studio City. For information on how to obtain tickets, message Jayla at www.myspace.comjaylamusic.
