Dear Pierce College Students, I am Jocelyn Chan, your newly elected ASO Treasurer for the 2008-09 year. When I joined ASO, I knew I wanted to be an active senator and do something for the students. Running for treasurer was the perfect opportunity for me to achieve that.

Summer school blurb
As the spring semester comes to its end, students are left with two options: have a 10-week break, or apply to take classes during summer. Many students already know that Pierce College offers two five-week sessions of classes during the summer. “I think summer school is a great thing,” said education major Jamie Quintanilla.
Unprofitable financial aid suspended
Community college students may find it harder to obtain loans because two lenders, CitiBank and J.P. Morgan Chase, have temporarily suspended certification of federal Stafford loans to community college students nationwide, according to the American Chronicle.
‘The second half, the better half’
As many students count down the last days of the semester, several deans are counting the last days of their school faculty careers. Shelley Gerstl, dean of Admissions and Records, and Dorothy Rupert, dean of Academic Affairs, are staying until the end of the semester.
Volleyball Opinion
Emerging victorious for six back-to-back games, including their conference opener, the men’s volleyball team seemed to promise a great season. Sadly, the winning streak was the team’s biggest firework, and by the time of the Western State Conference, all the sparks had gone out.
Pierce commits to eco-friendly renovations
In an effort to stave off global warming, the presidents and chancellors of 284 universities and colleges across the nation committed to negating the effects of our carbon-producing activities. The American College & Public University Presidents Climate Commitment, created last June, promises to “initiate development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible.
SPORTS BANQUET
Several awards were given at the sports banquet Monday in the faculty lounge, including the title of tennis MVP to Kostya Omelyanchuk. Other awards presented were “most improved” to Enrique Lewin for tennis and “the coaches award” to Antonio Cortez in tennis.
Get out your caps, gowns
The 60th annual Pierce College graduation will take place June 4 at 6 p.m., at Swisher Park, across from the cafeteria. Graduates are scheduled to arrive by 5:15 p.m. in order to register and receive instructions. Thirteen-hundred students submitted a petition for graduation, but only 500 are expected to attend the ceremony.
Reality TV puts a price on human values
What happened to Tila Tequila’s first soul mate from season one of “A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila?” What about that of Bret Michaels from “Rock of Love?” And the unlucky bloke from “I Love New York?” The sick portrayal of romance idolized by hundreds of thousands of teenagers is a twisted reflection of America’s values, which seem to be founded on an “entertainment first, integrity second” basis.
