Recycling for a difference(opinion)

Pierce College has started a new recycling program this semester along with West Los Angeles.

The recycling program started by both schools in the LACCD is a first. What the main purpose of the program is to promote a better cleaner environment. Boxes are put in classrooms for people to throw away trash that they might have. There are trashcans around campus that you say trash only and that is where you throw of course your trash. People sometimes forget to throw away their trash and I hate that.

I think this is a great program started by Pierce. Anytime you talk about recycling, most people just ignores it and that is sad. We need to get more educated about what will come if you just take the time and try it. Keeping the campus clean is a hard job but what would help I feel is doing something simple as picking up something off the ground and throwing it away. Robert Garber, Pierce President, told me that what they don’t have is a good recycling program and I think that this program is a good start in getting a good recycling program.

The campus in my opinion is a very beautiful campus and to think people don’t care about what it looks is sad. Mellisa Meck, a Pierce Student, put it best when she told me that recycling is always a good idea because we are gearing up to change the world, save our environment and we can keep the materials in the process that we can reuse later like paper. I feel that recycling is important because people don’t want to walk and see trash on the floor or see broken glass on the ground. Some people get to lazy and don’t want to throw their stuff away and that needs to stop.

In my opinion, the program at Pierce started at a perfect time because if you see the type of world we are living in. We are using to much power and water and this is not a good thing . I feel like we need to get educated now about recycling and saving energy as well. We need to try and improve what already is a beautiful campus we have here and their is nothing wrong with that. I think that one of the changes that will come from this program is that it might change their view in how they see the enviroment. It isn’t just about throwing away your trash like your bottles and paper but keeping animals safe.

I hope the program brings attention to you people because because when it comes to young people it seems as if they don’t know what happens when the trash is picked up. I talked to Paul Nieman, College Facilities Director, and he told me that they pack up the trash and send it to Japan and Asia. The people there sort out the cans and bottles and reuse them. I could not believe that they did such things like that when it came to bottles and cans. Learning stuff like that make wanting to know that there is more to recycling.

In the end I hope this program will open young students eyes and install some sort of value when it comes to recycling. When you are young you think that you know everything but you don’t and that is hard to admit sometimes. Young people should know what happens when you don’t recycle and save energy. It would sad to see a person not concerned about the environment but now and days we live in a world that cares more about their looks and not the looks of their school, beaches, lakes or forest.

My final thought is that this program might not mean that muchto a lot of students but I hope that just a few people have a different view when it comes to recycling. Just know that throwing trash away and saving eletricity is helping our enviroment.
