First-place Brahmas dig through Palomar

Philip George, Spring 2009 Assistant Sports Editor

The sound of palm on leather left a ringing in the ears of the Comets as the Pierce College women’s volleyball team defeated their opponents from Palomar College, 3-1, last night in the South Gym.

Outside hitters Janet Alvarado and Sarah Martin led the Brahma attack, each recording 13 kills with Martin recording three aces, while libero Ashley Clark paced the defense with seven digs, raising her Western State Conference lead in that category to 106 on the season.

Pierce won the first set, 25-11, with team captain Kameron Ward slamming the ball to the floor on the first game point for the ace. The Brahmas came from behind in the second set, but ran away with it late, 25-17.

It was Palomar all the way in the third set, scoring the first five points of the set and never relinquishing the lead en route to a 25-20 victory, but that only prolonged defeat as Pierce crushed the Comets, 25-14, in the fourth and final set – Alvarado racking up the kill at the second match point.

Next up, the first-place Brahmas (6-1) head south for the San Diego Mesa College tournament set to take place tomorrow and Saturday.

Natasha Wilroy (16), of Pierce’s womens volleyball drives home a point during the third set of their 3 sets to 1 home victory over Palomar College on Sept. 17, 2008. ()
