For most students at Pierce College, the Student Community Center might as well be another “do not enter” zone.
The SCC opened at the end of last semester. When it first opened, there were people around campus promoting the Center to students. Since then, however, nothing has been done to make students aware of the building.
Christian Marfil-Amatulli, Associated Students Organization president, said he is planning a few ways to continue the promotion, including having a couple concerts outside the Center to attract people and installing more lights around the building to show students the building is still open at night.
He also plans for the art and photography departments to display contest-winning projects on a wall in the building.Marfil-Amatulli said every time he goes in there, there about 50 people hanging out.”The room isn’t only for hanging out and partying. It’s for studying also,” he said, pointing out the advantage of a less-packed building. “It’s good when sometimes there are only two or three people in there. It’s quiet for those who want to study.”
Rachael Light, psychology major, said, “I think it’s [great] for a few reasons. When it’s ridiculously hot or pouring rain, it’s a good place to go rather than just standing outside. For studying and homework purposes as well, because in-between classes you have somewhere to get your stuff done.”
Regarding more students finding out about the Student Community Center, Marfil-Amatulli said, “It’ll get happening.”
