The Campus Center was full of exhausted dancers Sunday trying to prove to choreographers that they have what it takes to be in the fall dance show.
More than 50 people went to audition for the folk dance show.
“The auditions are actually really easy. It’s just the basics. If we get this down we could get the rest easily,” said CSUN student, Nicole Lopez.
Countries from which the dances originate range from the Americas to Romania.
According to dance professor Marian Weiser, this dance show will have approximately 17 individual pieces.
“The students are only allowed to be in three dances. The students who choreograph dances, their dances shouldn’t be longer than three minutes,” Weiser said. “However, the guest choreographers are allowed eight to ten minutes per dance because it’s a great opportunity for the students to be taught by them.”
David Araujl, an 18-year-old student at Pierce College, is choreographing the hip-hop routine for the event.
“I went to my friend’s house and we thought of it,” Araujl said. “We started from scratch and it took about two hours to come up with it.”
Weiser explained that this audition was the most diverse they have ever had.
“With this dance show I always hope, at least if for no one else, the students involved would develop an understanding of diverse people,” Weiser said. “For the audience, I hope they’d gain a wonder for other people. I’m always hoping for depth beyond entertainment.”
There will be two performances which will be on a Friday and Saturday night.
On the Saturday matinee, there will be a Children’s Dance Theatre Concert at 2 p.m. The folk dance show will be Dec. 19 and 20.
