An Academic Senate Meeting took place at Pierce College in the conference room last Monday at 2:15 p.m. The meeting started out with the subject of the Pay-Pal accounts getting easier to deal with online. President Robert Garber brought up an issue about the state budget. Five million goes to school and also an additional 20 million is granted later. About 50 percent of the state’s budget is invested in education. The government was in favor of increasing taxes to help with the budget problems so schools would not have to struggle. But this whole issue will of course be finalized after the election. “It is much easier for people to leave than to come back”, said President Garber when speaking about students. The district is hosting a reception for Jack Scott, President of Pasadena College, next Monday. Transfer Center Director, Elizabeth Atondo spoke about how we do not have a current district policy. They are trying to add another policy along with the GE. “It is best for our students if we can align our policies”, said Atondo. Prop J was said to be voted yes upon because it will help make improvements for buildings at Pierce College. The Daily News was against this and does not support it. On Oct. 20 there will be a lunch held in the Faculty Staff Resource Center at 12:45 p.m. The main focuses will be on learning communities, academic and student success class, and self reflective learning. “We will have a student success application online”, said Goodman Izzy, Chemistry/Past President. There was a problem with emails last week, students were not able to send emails to teachers. But some teachers were able to send assignments through emails and some were not. The college is said to be working on it. Many were saying that Pierce College needs to really start financing emailing. The main problem was the incoming emails. “We need to be on that”, said Goodman. Making students more effective learners was also discussed throughout the meeting. On online there is an application for teachers to fill out answers to questions concerning what is done in the class and what a teacher should be doing during that time. Basically making students more effective learners by bringing more consciousness to student’s success. More emphasis was on writing and reading.
