A list of motions were voted on by the Academic Senate Members Nov 17,2008 at the Academic Senate Meeting in the College Services Conference Room. The Academic Senate Members voted right away on four additions that President Tom Rosdahl added to the agenda. The four new additions were 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 11.3 which was about terms that were expiring in the Senate. The motion was voted on and passed. Other motions that were voted on at the meeting were the approving of the Curriculum Committee Charter, A Document that was shown by President Tom Rosdahl at the meeting and the Approval of Minutes. Pierce College President Robert Garber, who gives the College Administration report, was the first speaker of the meeting. The first topic that President Garber spoke about is the budget crisis. “(The) budget situation is still up in the air” says President Garber about how he feels where the situation is right now. According to the agenda, President Garber says that there is a projection that there could be a state budget deficit of about $2.5 billion. In the agenda, He also says “This situation is serious” adds President Garber about how bad the state budget crisis could get for Pierce College. Community Colleges get $250 million, which comes to 10 percent to the District Pierce is in. If cuts are made, The district could lose $35 million but only Proposition 98 would only lose or cut only $1 billion. President Robert Garber also adds about the budget cuts. “We should make the sincere efforts to cut” says President Garber about trying to make cuts. Gail Hobbs, At-Large Senator and a Professor of Geography, made a comment of the budget cuts. “Offering classes when teachers took no pay until after” and Gail Hobbs also adds “We made the effort” she adds how she feels they have made the effort and how some teachers taught while not getting paid right away. The Chancellor will be coming to Pierce to talk about the budget. The meeting will be Nov 18,2008 in the Great Hall/ Student Community Center at 2p.m.. A second issue brought up by President Garber was the possible enrollment fee going up. The enrollment fee would go up by six dollars. “We are suppose to collect a million bucks in student fees” says President Garber about how much money they are to collect in those fees. President Garber also said they they will still be hiring Faculty. “Fall hires will happen” and “Hire 8 people” President Garber adds about still hiring faculty and how many. The last issue that President Garber spoke about was Measure J. He spoke about how Pierce has $400 million in projects plus $15 million in energy projects which could bring the total of everything to $450 million. President Robert Garber talked about how they will decide what project to do first. A meeting with Sasaki is set for Dec 8,2008. “Sasaki is just doing the placement of (the) buildings” President Garber adds about Sasaki’s role in the building’s placement. President Garber also spoke about adding Solar Panels around campus and what type. “4 Mega Watts Solar Panels” and also adds “Thin Solar Panels would not work” says Presdent Garber about the type they should use and also adds “PAB, Lot 7, Lot 8 and around the stadium” about where the Solar Panels would be placed. Elizabeth Atondo, a Non-Member and who is also the Transfer Center Director, an Associate Professor of Counseling and Articulation Officer, spoke about many issues. The first issue she spoke about is the CSU applications have to be in Nov 30. Elizabeth Atondo said that there will be 10,000 fewer spots for students in for fall 2009. “As soon as they hit that number, they closed” adds Elizabeth Atondo about how they will not accept no more applications after a certain number. A second topic brought up was about a new program. Elizabeth Atondo met last Friday with the CSU Chancellor. She spoke about they are trying a new pilot program. “This is a huge program for our Students” adds Elizabeth Atondo about how this program will important to students. The program according to Elizabeth Atondo has some draw backs. ” What if (it) is not a valid prerequisite? adds Elizabeth Atondo about the concern of taking a class and not having to take it or not sure it was necessary plus she adds “CSU and UC don’t do it” she adds about how those schools have not done the program. Tom Rosdahl, who is President and a Professor of Industrial Technology, spoke about a resolution packet that was shown at the meeting. The letter “P” means it passed. “(Compared to) Previous one, it was a pretty decent meeting” adds Tom Rosdahl about a meeting that he attended and how it was more interesting that the last one. David Schutzer, Treasurer and a Professor of Anthropology, gave a short Treasurer’s Report. David Schutzer talked about how 33 people have paid their dues. Their dues are $40 and the balance so far in the Web site funds is $1,500. President Tom Rosdahl brought up to issues that are about some old business. Tom Rosdahl said “Concern about the Library people” says Tom Rosdahl about how these people are voicing concern. Tom Rosdahl says that the Library want a vote. Right now it is non-voting. A discussion broke out about how it could be solved. Somebody brought up the idea of having a non-member attend the meeting. Tom Rosdahl also spoke about the length of Curriculum meetings. “Our meetings are getting longer and longer” says President Tom Rosdahl about how the meeting are very long and how they seem to be getting longer. Ethics and a Professor of Anthropology and Department Chair of Anthropological and Geographical Science, along with Tom Rosdahl says about the Pierce College Program Review. “This is fine. All I am going to do is cut and paste” said Phil Stein about how easy this will be to read and be able to pick out the important information. Tom Rosdahl adds “I got a document and I never looked at it again” says Tom Rosdahl about how some documents and its length. What Tom Rosdahl and Phil Stein are talking about is the Pierce College Program Review and what this is to help future plans for Academic Program Plans for the future according to the agenda. The last order of the meeting was President Tom Rosdahal talking about The PCC Committee, Which stands for Pierce College Council. “Send an e-mail to all faculty to see who wants to be on PCC Committee” adds Tom Rosdahl about finding new people to be on the Committee. -30-
