The men’s volleyball team at Pierce College lost their starting setter and now they are working hard to step up their game. Sia Irilian, 18, who had been playing volleyball for nine years and was the starting setter for the Brahmas, quit after their March 12 game against Moorpark College.

Airport security vs. frustrated fidgeting
What I hate most about flying is the security check. I don’t mind the wait, or having to take off my shoes, or cramming all my embarrassing hygiene products in a transparent Zip-loc for the world to stare at, or being taken into a cubicle to be privately patted down.
Softball MVP hopes best for her last season
“She’s my best player in 10 years,” head coach Pat Grennan said of Jamie Domine, second-year player on the Pierce College softball team. Just 20 years old, Jamie Domine has a batting average of 350 and leads the team in RBIs. “Jamie has the potential to be a division one player,” Grennan said.
Careless pitching hands 11-3 game to COC
The baseball team lost 11-3 at home April 1 to conference leader College of the Canyons. Pitcher Nathan Perlitsh said despite the good plays they executed, they could not make up for the Cougars’ 16 hits. “It was a struggle,” Perlitsh said. “We had a few errors at bad times, but it’s not an excuse for hits the pitching staff gave up.
Valley swim team sinks Pierce 67-44
Valley College defeated Pierce College at swim meet Friday afternoon, 67-44. The event was a dual meet between Pierce and Valley for both men and women, with diving and swimming rounds. “We know that team very well because they train with us every day, because their pool, the pool that they’ve been using, is broken down,” said Fred Shaw, Pierce head coach.
ASO candidates speak to record student turnout
Student government candidates were given a chance to duke it out April 8, in what may have been the Associated Students Organization’s largest election forum in recent years. Speeches were delivered by 10 candidates to a crowd of about 50 students in the new Student-Community Center, which was opened just for the event, even though its development is not quite finished.
Third construction bond would add three buildings
The possibility of a third construction bond was discussed at the Academic Senate meeting April 7. Pierce College president Robert Garber explained that the district board of trustees will consider placing a third construction bond on the ballot when they meet on April 23 in Pierce’s newly built Student Community Center.
Highly-supported candidate elected to LACCD board of trustees
Winnetka resident Miguel Santiago, 35, was sworn in as the newest member of the Los Angeles Community College District board of trustees on April 9. Chosen by the board members from a group of 27 applicants to fill the position left by Warren Furutani, who was elected in February to the California State Assembly, Santiago says he hopes to “live up to the board’s trust and confidence.

A day for women’s month
In recognition of Women’s History Month, three very accomplished women provided insight and inspiration at a March 11 seminar on campus. It was sponsored by the History and Humanities departments, in collaboration with the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute. Named after the United Farm Workers co-founder, the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute is an educational partnership between the Los Angeles Community College District and founding Los Angeles unions.
