Bill adds to part-time teacher workloads
A bill that would allow part-time professors to teach one more unit within California community college districts has been passed in the California state Assembly and is presently being discussed in the state Senate Committee on Education. Assembly Bill 591 was authored and introduced by Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, who was unable to be reached for comment.
Clubs for campus unity
Most students must have heard of the Associated Students Organization. The ASO Web site calls it a “student government [that] supports the growth of the Pierce Campus through active involvement with students, faculty and staff. A contagious respiratory illness, also called the flu, has caused a great deal of stress and absence from class and work alike this season According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 5 to 20 percent of the United States population gets the flu every year.
Late game catch-up doesn’t save Brahmas
Trailing by as many as 12 runs early in the March 20 game, the Pierce College baseball team battled back the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines, but lost 16-12. The game marks the end of the Western State Conference spring break tournament, which resulted in three losses – of three games played – for the Brahmas.
Day-to-day fray
To work 20 hours a week, carry 12 units and be a single parent of a 4-year-old child is enough to keep anyone busy. This is how Melissa Alvarado lives on a day-to-day basis. Alvarado, 26, a possible business or accounting major, is an active mother whose days never seem to end.
Armenian Genocide
“Who remembers the Armenians?” When Adolf Hitler asked his subordinates during World War II whether any of them recall the killings of more than 1 million Armenians in the early 1900s, there was no response. Today, Pierce College is taking the first steps in spreading awareness of the Armenian Genocide through the medium of art, with the opening of the “Power of the Poster” exhibition in April – the month of commemoration of the genocide.
Desperately seeking bodyguard
Owen Wilson stars in “Drillbit Taylor,” a PG-13 comedy about a homeless guy pretending to be a bodyguard to make some money off of three wimpy kids. It is the first day of high school, and Ryan (Troy Gentile) and Wade (Nate Hartley) are positive that they will be popular this year.
Is more security worth less freedom?
The Pierce College ENCORE/Oasis program continued its lecture series March 13 with Professor Norm Levy’s talk entitled, “Freedom vs. Security post 9/11.” ENCORE students accounted for the vast majority of the participants, but other students joined in as well.
One out of four teen females has an STD
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed a fact about teenage girls today: One out of four have a sexually transmitted disease. Chlamydia, a bacterial infection and the most common type of STD in the United States, is also the most common among women at Pierce College.
