“Moooo!” No, it’s not the sound of cattle being herded along the farm road; it’s the sound of smokers being herded into any one of the nine tiny boxes where we are now allowed to smoke on campus. All we need now are faculty members standing around us with electric cattle prods to make sure we stay within the lines.

Tax prep program back for all
The annual Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is back to offer free tax preparation to both students and non-students. Through the program, which is located in Room 3218 of the Business Education Building, Business 10 students offer free income tax preparation for anyone making less than $40,000 a year.
Academic Senate discusses budget cuts
The Pierce College Academic Senate met on Feb. 11 to address a lengthy agenda, primarily concerning the school’s budget. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) supported Proposition 92, an initiative that stood to financially benefit all nine LACCD campuses.
Become a rock star on your own time
The video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band have made it possible for everyone to be a rock star in the comfort of their own home. Guitar Hero is a series of music video games released in 2005-2006 worldwide by RedOctane and Activision. Guitar Hero comes with a controller that looks like a guitar and the game itself involves playing the guitar and hitting the right notes in songs that range from “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath to “Fat Lip” by Sum 41.
Textbooks inflate emotions on campus
Many Pierce College students rush to the campus bookstore to find used books for affordable prices, only to find that the books they are searching for are much more expensive than they may have anticipated. Despite grants and financial aid being available, some students do not have that luxury.
Retired psychologist shares wisdom
Dr. Larry Andre, professor of philosophy at Pierce College since 1998, is regarded by many students as one of the most likeable instructors on campus. After one of his courses, most students find philosophy to be a real part of their everyday lives. “Pierce is the greatest place to teach,” said Andre, a professor known for his edgy humor.
PACE paves path for busy students
An insurance broker. A tutor for deaf children. A loan officer. These are some of the Pierce College students juggling work and school who have found a path to higher education that suits their unique needs in the Pierce Accelerated College Education (PACE) program.
Web update, out-of-date
The highly anticipated, newly designed Los Angeles Pierce College Web site made its debut at the beginning of this semester. I was underwhelmed and disappointed. The Los Angeles Community College District mandated that all district Web sites use the new Content Management System.
A policy as thin as smoke
As an ex-smoker, I understand the harmful effects of the disgusting habit. I understand the animosity felt when someone tells you that you can’t smoke in a certain place. I used to hate rules against smoking and believed they infringed on my God-given rights.
Suffering secondhand
It is safe to assume that everyone reading this publication is well aware of the fact that cigarette smoke is harmful to an individual’s health. The number of public service announcements warning consumers of the fatality of smoking cigarettes is countless.
