Brahmas’ Winning Strike Came to an End

Brahmas’ Wining Strike

Came to an End

All appeared to be on cruse control as the Pierce College men’s volleyball team won the first set against the Santa Monica College men’s volleyball team at the Pierce Gymnasium on Wednesday night. But their seven games strike came to an end, after loosing the next three sets in a roll to the Westside rivals. The Brahmas look very confident and took the lead early in the first set, but Todd Travis and the rest of the Corsairs had something else in mind.

In the first set, Brahman’s defense dominated the Corsairs. Their game plans look organized and eager to control the set. With the score 15 to 12 on the first set Corsairs’ couch  John Meyer called a time out to regroup and tried to stop the bleeding. The Brahmas were not stopping for anything, widen the gap with a 5 point run to one and a combined collaboration of number 11 Jackson Metichecchia and number 23 Javael Boykins.

The Corsairs were not giving up that easy. They kept coming back but the Brahmas managed to have an answer to their challenge. An unforced error by Brandon Miller number 14 of the Corsairs gave the match point to the Brahmas and a block by their defense gave them the lead 1 set to none. As the teams were leaving the court, Metichecchia was chanting “let’s go let’s go,”

For the next three sets, it seems a totally different Brahmas’ team. At times they look very disconnected from each other. On the other side of the court the Corsairs’ team looked settle and ready to play.

The second set was an exchange of leads by both teams, which went to extra points. After a tied score 31 to 31 the Corsairs made a quick adjustment on their defense wining the next two points and putting set number two in their gym bag.

A combination of error by the Brahmas’ players such as miscommunications, long services, shots landing out of bounds and blocked shots by the opponent’s defense gave way to the visiting team to win the next two set and giving the first defeat of the season to the Brahmas. Travis number 5 from the Corsairs took charge by obtaining several kills that demoralized any intent of comeback by the home team.

“After we won the first game (set), it went to our heads. We got too cocky and Santa Monica came to play,” Boykins said.

Prior to tonight’s game Pierce had won 21 sets and had only lost 2, with a record of 7 consecutive victories.

“This was the worst game ever. Santa Monica played a great game,” Eddie Stanislawski coach of the Brahmas said.

Next game for the Brahmas is Friday night at seven at the gymnasium against El Camino College.

It was an exciting night for the visiting team and its fans, but a disappointing one for the home crowd, among them was Robert Garber president of Pierce. When asked to comment about the game, he said “Santa Monica played a great game. They are better organized. We‘ll get them next time,”
