The Pierce College softball team was defeated on their home field in a doubleheader game against the Moorpark Raiders on Thursday. The first game the Brahmas lost 6-2 and the second game they lost 11- 7.
In the first game the Brahmas appeared to be sleeping in the outfield as they missed catching line drives and ground balls.
By the fourth inning the Brahmas had only scored two points which set the tone for the game and for their loss.
“It sucks that we lost but we still played together,” said Alyse Scarmozzino, who pitched seven innings. “I could have could have hit better. Pitching, I tried.”
The coaches kept using the same plays that had players sacrificing outs in order to score a run. This did not help them, but instead hurt them in the end. The Brahmas did not score any more runs besides what they scored prior to the fifth inning.
“The bunt is a play that is designed to give up an out so you play for one run,” said Gregg Wertz, the Assistant coach. “Typically when you bunt a ball the idea is that one run is important.”
The Brahmas either never got a lead or couldn’t keep a lead. In the second game they started off rough in the first two innings. By the third inning they scored six runs and they were up by two runs.
Diana Saunders got hurt at the end of that inning by sliding into third base. Coach Wertz said that Saunders had a swollen knee and that it was hurting her pretty bad. However it’s not an injury that is going to put her out of the lineup. They won’t know how bad her knee is hurt until after the weekend.
“It hurt a lot. I will play unless this thing is falling off,” Saunders said.
The game was going so well for the Brahmas that the Raiders had to switch from sophomore pitcher Bonnie Ward to freshman pitcher Taylor Neumann.
However, the pitcher for the Brahmas, Lauren Davis, played the whole seven innings. Davis fought hard, striking out six players and only walking three players.
They maintained a strong lead until the top of the seventh inning win they lost control of the game and the Raiders scored seven run.
“We played the worst and the best game that we ever played,” said Davis.
Wertz explained that he didn’t switch pitchers because Scarmozzino pitched all seven innings of the first game.
“We are going to do or die with the last pitcher that we had,” Wertz said. “Unfortunately it didn’t turn out in our favor and we didn’t have another pitcher to put in.”
When the bottom of the seventh inning arrived, the Brahmas had no gas in their system to score a single run.
The next game for the Brahma’s is at Pierce College on Tuesday, March 17.
