Texting with two tons behind you

Paula Duran / Roundup

Is it you driving or your cell phone?

Before you do it one more time, you definitely must know that driving while text messaging is more dangerous than drinking and driving, or driving under the influence of marijuana.

A study made by The Transport Research Laboratory found that motorists who were texting or reading text messages while they were on the road highly increased their risk to get in an accident.

The study shows that reaction times of drivers under the legal limit of alcohol were 12 percent slower and those who were under the influence of cannabis were 21 percent slower.  On the other hand, drivers who sent or read text messages were much worse, weakening their reaction by 35 percent.

Also, the study demonstrated that it takes longer to compose text messages while driving. Writing messages from a desk takes 22 seconds in average compared to 63 seconds when written in the car.

Aside from all these, motorists who sent or read text messages were found by the research to be more frequently prone to drift out of their lane.

When you drive you have a lot of responsibility in your hands and you should not take driving as a game. Driving means taking risks.

You have your life and other people’s lives in your hands. That is something that you should always keep in mind. You get in your car and you really do not know what you are going to face while you are driving.

Have you thought about what you would do if a driver who was using their mobile phone and did not see you because they were too distracted answering a text message hits you? It is hard to feel or even say something because you do not know it until you face a situation like this.

Moreover, think about what would happen if you were the one who was texting and got yourself in a big accident and hurt innocent people.  It sounds very cruel and dramatic, but that is the truth and it could happen.

If you think you are a multitasking person, you can do everything and there is nothing that can stop you, I am sorry to tell you but this is not how it works. And even if you are the best student, friend, son, the best of the best and things happen. Unfortunately you do not have control over everything when you drive.

You can prevent it and act smart. Stop texting and prove yourself that your life is more valuable than a simple text message saying, “Yo- on my way there.. see u soon 🙂 .”
