For the second consecutive week the Pierce team was outperformed.
Pierce head coach Efrain Martinez stated after the game “we didn’t perform tonight, they did”, “we took a step back tonight” about his team’s performance.
The Pierce College football team would lose to the Bulldogs of Allan Hancock by a score of 17-42 Saturday night. Early turnovers would see the Brahmas shot at victory disappear as the game progressed. Pierce would have their first two possessions of the night end on fumbles.
Both turnovers would put the Bulldogs in great scoring position deep within the Pierce redzone. The Bulldogs would capitalize on the Brahmas mistakes taking a quick 0-14 lead over the host Brahmas.
Pierce would finally get on the board after a 27-yard field goal by Steven Sandoval. Putting the game at 3-21.
Pierce would be trailing 3-28 when the most exciting play of game for the Brahmas would take place. Coleman Edmond would return the kickoff following a Bulldog touchdown pass from Gunnar Jespersen to Marquelo Suel for a touchdown. Edmond returned the kick 94-yards.
Needing a big drive to get Pierce back into the game quarterback Matt Wabby would start the second half the way he finished the first half, with an interception.
The Pierce defense which struggled all night showed it again. When on third-and-18 the Bulldogs would convert. That is after having a second-and-30. That inability to stop the bulldog offense would prove costly as Jespersen would scamper into the end zone pushing the Bulldog lead to 32 points.
For the fifth time on the night the Brahma offense would turn the ball over. Again it would be deep within the Brahma redzone. This time however the defense would be up for the task and stop the Bulldog offense on fourth-and-goal.
Pierce would have a small controversy when on a fourth-and-8 play trailing by 32 points; Pierce would decide to punt instead of going for the conversion. Another small controversy would occur when Pierce decided not to go for the two-point-conversion after a late touchdown. Pierce initially was setting up for the two-point-conversion but decided not to after a 5-yard penalty pushed them back to the 8-yard line. Martinez explained his decision on why he didn’t attempt the conversions when he said “The percentages were not good”.
Pierce quarterback Matt Wabby who finished with 72-yards passing was replaced late in the fourth quarter by back-up Daniel Berhe. Martinez would say “Wabby is still our guy; he still gives us the best chance to win”.
The Pierce record now stands at 1-2. The Brahmas have next week to regroup and prepare for their road game against East Los Angeles College on Oct.3 at 6pm. The Brahmas return to Sheppard stadium on Oct. 10 to face West Los Angeles College at 7pm.
