October is here once again and that means Halloween is just around the corner.
Halloween night is typically celebrated by children who dress up and go trick-or-treating; but they aren’t the only ones who like to dress up. Halloween isn’t just a night of fun for kids anymore. More and more of the older crowd are partaking in the festivities as well and why shouldn’t they?
According to the American Folklife Center, the origin behind dressing up goes back to the ancient belief that the souls of the dead would come back to life. People would dress up in honor of the spirits. That is why some of the most classic and common Halloween costumes include witches, ghosts and skeletons.
After browsing through a few Halloween costume websites; I discovered that there were actually more teen and adult costumes than there were children’s costumes. If costume companies are producing more adult costumes than they are children’s costumes; that could only indicate that the adult population that dresses up is plentiful.
Age shouldn’t be a factor for who can or can’t dress up for Halloween. It’s supposed to be about having fun and having the freedom to be whatever you want to be for that one night out of the year. What if you are 70 years old and want to dress up as Peter Pan, is that okay? Well, it should be. There shouldn’t be an age limit to dress up and have fun.
Sure, kids dress up to go trick-or-treating, but the twenty-something’s and older are the ones who throw the fabulous Halloween parties. And lets face it, what’s a Halloween party without costumes? I’d say a pretty dull one.
When it comes down to it, there aren’t really guidelines for how old someone should be to dress up. It’s a matter of personal preference. The people who criticize other’s for dressing up are simply people who lack holiday spirit. You’re never too old for costume fun. It doesn’t matter if you are 9 years old or 90 years old, you can still have a good time during this fun-filled holiday.
